Science

Children have an endless curiosity about the world that we live in. The science program at Wandin Yallock Primary School aims to help students to ask questions that will enable them to make sense of the world in which they live and nurture their sense of wonderment. Science is not simply knowing how things work, but it also enables students to consider what impact decisions and developments can have on the environment and on the community in which they live.

Wandin Yallock takes an integrated approach to science in the curriculum. There are several themes across the school which lend themselves to a science focus. Some examples of these themes are:
  • Living Things
  • Simple Machines
  • Solar System
  • Natural Disasters/ Earth

Science in school has two dimensions;
  • Science knowledge and understanding
  • Science at work

Science Knowledge and Understanding builds student understanding of such scientific ideas as the diversity of living things, sustainable relationships, environment, chemical change, energy, Earth, etc.

Science at Work encourages students to be curious and to use scientific understanding to find answers to there questions.

At Wandin Yallock Primary School we provide real-life opportunities for children to develop a scientific understanding through hands on activities such as classroom experiments, school vegetable garden and providing access to experiences such as those offered by organisations like Healesville Sanctuary. We also hold a regular lunch time science club, which is offered to students in any level of the school.
